Antes de su forma actual, cinco de ellos fueron notas periodísticas y guiones de cine, y uno fue un serial de televisión. Hasta entonces había escrito tres libros de cuentos. Sin embargo, ninguno de los tres estaba concebido y resuelto como un todo, sino que cada cuento era una pieza autónoma y ocasional. De modo que la escritura de los sesenta y cuatro podía ser una aventura fascinante si lograba escribirlos todos con un mismo trazo, y con una unidad interna de tono y de estilo que los hiciera inseparables en la memoria del lector. Aquí está, listo para ser llevado a la mesa después de tanto andar del timbo al tambo peleando para sobrevivir a las perversidades de la incertidumbre. Todos los cuentos, salvo los dos primeros, fueron terminados al mismo tiempo, y cada uno lleva la fecha en que lo empecé. El orden en que están en esta edición es el que tenían en el cuaderno de notas. Siempre he creído que toda versión de un cuento es mejor que la anterior. ¿Corno saber entonces cuál debe ser la última? Es un secreto del oficio que no obedece a las leyes de la inteligencia sino a la magia de los instintos, como sabe la cocinera cuándo está la sopa. De todos modos, por las dudas, no volveré a leerlos, como nunca he vuelto a leer ninguno de mis libros por temor de arrepentirme. El que los lea sabrá qué hacer con ellos. Por fortuna, para estos doce cuentos peregrinos terminar en el cesto de los papeles debe ser como el alivio de volver a casa. Vacilé. Gallery es lo que se conoce comúnmente como una revista para hombres y como todas las de su género, aunque no con tanta falta de gusto como algunas, es muy aficionada a la divina forma femenina, al desnudo. En principio no tengo objeción a tal cosa y he escrito artículos para Gallery y para otras publicaciones semejantes. Después de todo, nadie me obliga a leer nada que no me agrade, aun cuando aparezca en el mismo ejemplar que uno de mis artículos. Siempre puedo arrancar las páginas donde aparece mi articulo y abrocharlas con otras del mismo tipo, desechando, si lo deseo, el resto de la revista. Y si aparece una fotografía reveladora en el reverso de una página que contiene parte de mi trabajo, no tengo por qué mirarla. Y si la miro, no me voy a morir. (Estoy seguro.). Mis artículos, no obstante, siempre trataban de temas científicos. Nunca me solicitaron que escribiese narrativa. Así, pues, cuando terminé de vacilar, dije con gran cautela: —Eric, como comprenderás, espero, no escribo literatura erótica. ¡Es verdad! ¡Es un tonto prejuicio que tengo! De vez en cuando escribo algún versito osado, pero sólo para hacer reír. —Lo sé —me dijo Eric—. Sólo quiero cuentos de misterio escritos en tu propio estilo. Los quiero de unas dos mil palabras de extensión y además, que te detengas antes de llegar al final para darle al lector la posibilidad de solucionar el misterio antes que tu detective. Publicaremos el desenlace del cuento en otra página. La idea me pareció interesante. El primer cuento salió bien, pero en definitiva, no aparecía en él un mayor dominio del género. Fue con el segundo, "Ningún refugio podría salvar" con el que pude hacer lo que me proponía. Como siempre he deseado mostrarme ecuánime con mis lectores, les diré en qué consiste mi plan. Cada cuento comienza con una conversación entre tres viejos amigos en la biblioteca de un club de hombres. El cuarto es Griswold, que está dormido al comienzo del relato. Algo en el diálogo lo hace despertar y le recuerda una anécdota, que relata hasta el punto en que los otros tres hombres tendrían que ser capaces de resolver el enigma. Nunca lo consiguen y Griswold les da la respuesta. Cuando Griswold llega al desenlace del cuento, el lector encontrará un indicador tipográfico (#) del hecho y tiene absoluta libertad para adivinar el desenlace antes de proseguir. Puede haber casos en los que este desenlace le resultará obvio. En otros el lector decidirá, indignado, que ningún ser humano podría haber resuelto ese rompecabezas, dada la escasez de elementos de juicio que se le han proporcionado. Puede haber otro que le haga pensar en retrospectiva, que debería haberlo adivinado y aplaudirá mi inteligencia al haber ocultado la respuesta sin incurrir en trampas. Podrá, en fin, decidir que al diablo con el cuento y desistir de hallar la solución leyendo el final. Cualquiera que sea la elección, espero tan sólo que un buen número de los cuentos le resulte interesante y que no lamente haber gastado dinero en la compra de este libro. Una última advertencia. Tengo propensión a aparecer como si supiese toda clase de cosas ocultas sobre espías, departamentos de policía y operativos secretos del gobierno. Si el lector siente curiosidad por saberlo, la verdad es que no sé nada de nada de estos temas. Todo lo invento y si alguien fuese un experto y comprobase que en algunos aspectos cometo errores flagrantes... ¡la razón es la que acabo de dar!
