Originalmente, el poema se llamó Comedia, nombre que designaba las obras con finales felices, por oposición al concepto clásico de la tragedia. Cuando a Giovanni Boccaccio recibió el encargo de escribir sobre la obra, la llamó Divina comedia para evidenciar la centralidad de los valores cristianos. Vacilé. Gallery es lo que se conoce comúnmente como una revista para hombres y como todas las de su género, aunque no con tanta falta de gusto como algunas, es muy aficionada a la divina forma femenina, al desnudo. En principio no tengo objeción a tal cosa y he escrito artículos para Gallery y para otras publicaciones semejantes. Después de todo, nadie me obliga a leer nada que no me agrade, aun cuando aparezca en el mismo ejemplar que uno de mis artículos. Siempre puedo arrancar las páginas donde aparece mi articulo y abrocharlas con otras del mismo tipo, desechando, si lo deseo, el resto de la revista. Y si aparece una fotografía reveladora en el reverso de una página que contiene parte de mi trabajo, no tengo por qué mirarla. Y si la miro, no me voy a morir. (Estoy seguro.). Mis artículos, no obstante, siempre trataban de temas científicos. Nunca me solicitaron que escribiese narrativa. Así, pues, cuando terminé de vacilar, dije con gran cautela: —Eric, como comprenderás, espero, no escribo literatura erótica. ¡Es verdad! ¡Es un tonto prejuicio que tengo! De vez en cuando escribo algún versito osado, pero sólo para hacer reír. —Lo sé —me dijo Eric—. Sólo quiero cuentos de misterio escritos en tu propio estilo. Los quiero de unas dos mil palabras de extensión y además, que te detengas antes de llegar al final para darle al lector la posibilidad de solucionar el misterio antes que tu detective. Publicaremos el desenlace del cuento en otra página. La idea me pareció interesante. El primer cuento salió bien, pero en definitiva, no aparecía en él un mayor dominio del género. Fue con el segundo, "Ningún refugio podría salvar" con el que pude hacer lo que me proponía. Como siempre he deseado mostrarme ecuánime con mis lectores, les diré en qué consiste mi plan. Cada cuento comienza con una conversación entre tres viejos amigos en la biblioteca de un club de hombres. El cuarto es Griswold, que está dormido al comienzo del relato. Algo en el diálogo lo hace despertar y le recuerda una anécdota, que relata hasta el punto en que los otros tres hombres tendrían que ser capaces de resolver el enigma. Nunca lo consiguen y Griswold les da la respuesta. Cuando Griswold llega al desenlace del cuento, el lector encontrará un indicador tipográfico (#) del hecho y tiene absoluta libertad para adivinar el desenlace antes de proseguir. Puede haber casos en los que este desenlace le resultará obvio. En otros el lector decidirá, indignado, que ningún ser humano podría haber resuelto ese rompecabezas, dada la escasez de elementos de juicio que se le han proporcionado. Puede haber otro que le haga pensar en retrospectiva, que debería haberlo adivinado y aplaudirá mi inteligencia al haber ocultado la respuesta sin incurrir en trampas. Podrá, en fin, decidir que al diablo con el cuento y desistir de hallar la solución leyendo el final. Cualquiera que sea la elección, espero tan sólo que un buen número de los cuentos le resulte interesante y que no lamente haber gastado dinero en la compra de este libro. Una última advertencia. Tengo propensión a aparecer como si supiese toda clase de cosas ocultas sobre espías, departamentos de policía y operativos secretos del gobierno. Si el lector siente curiosidad por saberlo, la verdad es que no sé nada de nada de estos temas. Todo lo invento y si alguien fuese un experto y comprobase que en algunos aspectos cometo errores flagrantes... ¡la razón es la que acabo de dar! Orgullo y prejuicio narra las aventuras y desventuras amorosas de las hermanas Bennet, centrándose en el personaje de Elizabeth, a través de las cuales la autora nos presenta con comicidad la sociedad de su tiempo y coloca a la mujer en un lugar más notorio que el que le correspondía en su época con la figura de la protagonista. La singular relación que se da entre Lizzy y Darcy es sin duda el mayor atractivo de la obra, ya que el lector se ve atraído durante todo el relato por ésta, que pasa por fases muy dispares hasta llegar por fin a la aceptación del amor por parte de los dos. A pesar de que muchos consideran romántica la historia que nos plantea Austen, la autora parece alejarse del prototipo de narración amorosa que se acostumbraba a dar. Los protagonistas tropiezan, cometen errores. Es más bien una visión realista de lo que puede llegar a ser un romance entre dos personas, donde quizá las cosas no lleguen a salir siempre como deseamos. Sin embargo, ni los cuentistas ni los críticos, menos los teóricos del cuento, dudan de su naturaleza insular y de su origen matemático, pues al llevar la cuenta de algo (cuento viene del latín computus) se debe cuidar una rigurosidad lógica porque de lo contrario los resultados no cuadran. Una de las definiciones más precisas es la de Jorge Luis Borges (Magíster dixit) que nunca escribió una novela y, para deleite nuestro, nos dejó inolvidables ejemplos de cuentos. El autor de "Sur" dice: "El cuento debe ser escrito de un modo que el lector espere algo continuamente, que haya expectativa, que se resuelva luego de un modo que pueda ser asombroso, en todo caso, que pueda parecer extraño y nunca capricho del autor, sino algo inevitable. Si puede ser asombroso e inevitable, mejor". A esto le agregamos que un buen cuento, si breve dos veces bueno, es un poema. Una interesante definición y relación de escritores que practican este, casi desconocido, género de la ficción hiperbreve le pertenece al académico Juan Armando Epple, quien en su ensayo “Brevísima relación sobre el cuento brevísimo” apunta: “Lo que ha dado en llamarse "cuento brevísimo", "micro-cuento" o "mini-cuento" no es simplemente una afición secundaria, apta para la nota humorística, el ingenio verbal o la relación anecdótica, si bien muchos de sus cultores aficionados no superan estos niveles”. El minicuento contemporáneo echa mano de todo lo que puede. Aprovecha las leyendas, los mitos, los clásicos de la literatura, del teatro, del cine, la religión, todo le sirve para comprometer al lector en una lectura intertextual, en la que están presentes la parodia, el aforismo, la fábula, la parábola, el epitafio y, por supuesto, el poema. Incluso el título es parte substancial del texto, llegando a redondear la historia contada. En el minicuento no interesa tanto lo que se escribe como lo que no se escribe, importa mucho más lo que se deja de decir, lo que se sugiere, porque allí está el verdadero universo narrativo. Antes de su forma actual, cinco de ellos fueron notas periodísticas y guiones de cine, y uno fue un serial de televisión. Otro lo conté hace quince años en una entrevista grabada, y el amigo a quien se lo conté lo transcribió y lo publicó, y ahora lo he vuelto a escribir a partir de esa versión. Ha sido una rara experiencia creativa que merece ser explicada, aunque sea para que los niños que quieren ser escritores cuando sean grandes sepan desde ahora qué insaciable y abrasivo es el vicio de escribir. Fue en México, a mi regreso de Barcelona, en 1974, donde se me hizo claro que este libro no debía ser una novela, como me pareció al principio, sino una colección de cuentos cortos, basados en hechos periodísticos pero redimidos de su condición mortal por las astucias de la poesía. Hasta entonces había escrito tres libros de cuentos. Sin embargo, ninguno de los tres estaba concebido y resuelto como un todo, sino que cada cuento era una pieza autónoma y ocasional. De modo que la escritura de los sesenta y cuatro podía ser una aventura fascinante si lograba escribirlos todos con un mismo trazo, y con una unidad interna de tono y de estilo que los hiciera inseparables en la memoria del lector. Aquí está, listo para ser llevado a la mesa después de tanto andar del timbo al tambo peleando para sobrevivir a las perversidades de la incertidumbre. Todos los cuentos, salvo los dos primeros, fueron terminados al mismo tiempo, y cada uno lleva la fecha en que lo empecé. El orden en que están en esta edición es el que tenían en el cuaderno de notas. Siempre he creído que toda versión de un cuento es mejor que la anterior. ¿Corno saber entonces cuál debe ser la última? Es un secreto del oficio que no obedece a las leyes de la inteligencia sino a la magia de los instintos, como sabe la cocinera cuándo está la sopa. De todos modos, por las dudas, no volveré a leerlos, como nunca he vuelto a leer ninguno de mis libros por temor de arrepentirme. El que los lea sabrá qué hacer con ellos. Por fortuna, para estos doce cuentos peregrinos terminar en el cesto de los papeles debe ser como el alivio de volver a casa. Era la primavera de 1936. Sólo me acuerdo de dos cosas. La primera es que él y yo éramos los únicos occidentales del público; hacía tan sólo unas semanas que habíamos dejado nuestro hogar en Holanda y todavía no me había acostumbrado al aislamiento cultural, por eso lo recuerdo tan vividamente. La segunda es lo contento que me sentí, tras meses de estudio intensivo del japonés, al darme cuenta de que entendía fragmentos de las conversaciones que oía a mi alrededor. De las jóvenes japonesas que bailaron ante mí en el estrado no recuerdo nada, salvo una vaga imagen de kimonos de brillantes colores. Por entonces no podía saber que casi cincuenta años después, en un lugar tan lejano como Nueva York, una de ellas se convertiría en una buena amiga mía y me dictaría sus memorias. Como historiador que soy, siempre he considerado que las memorias constituyen un material de primera mano, que no sólo nos proporciona datos de la persona en cuestión, sino también del mundo en el que ha vivido. Difieren de la biografía en que el autor de las memorias nunca tiene el grado de perspectiva que, de por sí, suele poseer el biógrafo. La autobiografía, si es que tal cosa existe, es algo así como preguntarle a un conejo qué aspecto tiene cuando salta por el prado. ¿Cómo va a saberlo? Pero, por otro lado, si queremos saber algo del prado, nadie está en mejor posición que el conejo para decírnoslo, siempre que tengamos en cuenta que nos perderemos todas aquellas cosas que el conejo no haya observado debido a su posición en un momento dado. Digo todo esto con la certeza del investigador cuya carrera está basada en esta suerte de distinciones. He de confesar, sin embargo, que las memorias de mi querida amiga Nitta Sayuri me obligaron a replantearme algunas de mis opiniones al respecto. Sí, ella nos muestra el mundo secreto en el que vivió; como si dijéramos, nos da la visión del prado desde el punto de vista del conejo. Posiblemente no haya una descripción mejor de la extraña vida de las geishas que la que aquí nos ofrece Sayuri. Pero además nos deja una manifestación de sí misma que es mucho más completa, más precisa y más emocionante que el largo capítulo que se le dedica a su vida en el libro Deslumbrantes joyas del Japón, o en los varios artículos sobre ella que han ido apareciendo a lo largo de los años en revistas y periódicos. Se diría que, al menos en el caso de este insólito tema, nadie conocía mejor a la autora de las memorias que ella misma.
